Every Scar Has A Story

“From every wound there is a scar, and every scar tells a story. A story that says, I survived.” –Unknown ≠≠
It was my senior year of high school when I found a lump in my neck. I had to get an ultrasound and a biopsy done to figure out what it was. Turns out, I had two cysts in the left half of my thyroid. The doctors found the cysts were benign so they were not cancerous. But still, they felt that I should have the left half of my thyroid removed. I had to go to various doctor appointments to prepare for the surgery and then in April, I had the left half of my thyroid taken out.
After my surgery the doctors kept telling me to use bio-oil so that was my scar would go away. Using this oil religiously would eventually remove the scar and you wouldn’t be able to tell I had surgery. Hearing them say that to me kind of offended me. My scar is a part of me. I didn’t want it to fade away. It has made me stronger and reminds me that my body is strong and will heal.
Scars are beautiful and each scar has a story to tell. The scar could have been formed at the happiest time in ones life, say a birth of a child causing the mother to have a C-section, or a dark time in ones life, say depression causing one started cutting themselves.
I believe all scars have beauty in them. I wanted to show the beauty of scars through my photography. Every scar you see photographed has a story and so I had the subjects write their story underneath the photo.
I am very passionate about showing the beauty of scars. They help make up who a person is. It shows character and the person’s body is strong enough to overcome and heal.
